From September through November of 2016:
  • We received and accepted 90 new children, a 90% increase over the same time period last year.
  • We served 432 children
  • None of this would have been possible without the efforts of 195 dedicated volunteers
  • You were responsible for the reunification of 10 children and the adoption of 15 children
  • Because of you, 9 children were placed in the custody of a relative, 11 children received family services, and every new child had an assigned Advocate.
While I am not sure what the New Year will bring, I do know that because of you, it will hold hope and possibility for hundreds of children in Montgomery County. God bless and Happy New Year!

Monthly Education Committee Meetings:
Regular monthly meeting schedule resumes in January! Monthly education committee meetings are held the 4th Wednesday of each month from 2-4 pm at the CASA office. Advocates are encouraged to contact your supervisor and/or Kim Ayres with immediate needs.
Please consider utilizing this resource of veteran educators if you have questions or concerns about your CASA child’s education. No question is too big or too small. We are here for you!

The Volunteer Council Corner
By Susan Olver
2016 CPS Appreciation Luncheon
The CASA Montgomery County Volunteer Council will hold their next Advocate Gathering and Support Meeting on Thursday, January 12th at 6:30 pm in the home of Advocate Laurie Schoepf in The Woodlands. We will have an informal meeting where we will encourage Advocates to freely discuss their current case (or one from the past) that they’ve struggled with, including questions, frustrations, and situations that were difficult.
Please note, this gathering is only meant for the Advocate to have a safe, confidential place to discuss their case. Advocates do not give advice on how to proceed on a specific issue/case. All Advocates should be working very closely with their supervisor for direction. There will be a supervisor in attendance, which will be extremely helpful in guiding the discussion.
You will receive two hours of continuing education credit for your attendance.
Please RSVP to Susan Olver at before January 9, 2017 if you would like to attend.
Driving directions will be sent the week of the meeting.

Legislative Outlook
By Ann McAlpin
Just a reminder, the CASA Day at the Capitol is coming up on February 16, 2017.
What is the CASA Day at the Capitol? This one-day event is attended by hundreds of CASA volunteers and staff from across the state during the Texas legislative session. The day normally begins with a briefing of big picture issues for the Legislative Session, an overview of any new legislation in process and detailed information on Texas CASA legislative priorities. The day continues with panel discussions and a keynote address. If you're interested in being a part of the 2017 CASA Day at the Capitol, please let your supervisor know.
We will most likely ask for Advocates to come forward with specific stories when the legislative priorities are finalized, so be on the lookout for that request. Thank you all for the amazing work you do to change the future for these children, and I hope to see you at the Capitol in February!

CASA Child Advocates of Montgomery County offers two informational events each month, specifically designed to give anyone who is considering becoming an Advocate a chance to gain insight into this unique and rewarding role. Hosted by the Advocate Recruitment Committee, guests can sit down, one-on-one, with current CASA volunteers to discuss their questions and concerns, and hear first-hand the difference Advocates make in children’s lives.
