THE ATLANTA MEMORIAL PARK CONSERVANCY AND THE CITY OF ATLANTA CELEBRATE THE OPENING OF THE NEW MEMORIAL PARK PLAYGROUND WITH A RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY

Atlanta – January 27, 2017 – On Thursday morning, January 26, 2017, the City of Atlanta and the Atlanta Memorial Park Conservancy welcomed over 100 guests for the unveiling of the new playground at Memorial Park.

Attendees heard remarks from Mayor Kasim Reed, Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Amy Phuong, Department of Watershed Management Commissioner Kishia Powell, Atlanta City Councilmember Yolanda Adrean, Park Pride Executive Director Michael Halicki and Atlanta Memorial Park Conservancy Executive Director Catherine Spillman.

The City of Atlanta committed $200,000 towards the project with an additional $200,000 raised by the Atlanta Memorial Park Conservancy through a combination of private donations including an anonymous donation of $100,000 and a generous Legacy Grant award from Park Pride.

The new playground blends seamlessly into the tree-filled landscape of Memorial Park and features many fun and playful elements of playground design. Using natural tones, the play equipment from Landscape Structures offers two areas of play, one geared towards 2-5 year olds and the other for 5-12 year olds. A special feature of the playground, a PlayWeb designed by Playworld, is for ages 5 and up as evidenced by Councilmember Adrean as she climbed the web structure during the morning’s festivities for an aerial view of the new playground.

During Mayor Reed’s comments, the Mayor shared, “we are here today to celebrate [the improvements which] will enhance public safety for all of our city’s residents and visitors using this park…. The City of Atlanta believes in quality parks and we are going to do more and more just like this one. One of our goals is to make sure that everyone in the city of Atlanta, no matter where they live, is within a half mile walk of a park, nature preserve or green space.”

Ms. Spillman shared that the new playground “is a success story on how the City, the Conservancy, our partners and the neighbors surrounding Memorial Park came together to create an incredible amenity for the citizens of Atlanta while also addressing the larger watershed issues in the Park.”

Looking forward, the Atlanta Memorial Park Conservancy will continue its collaborative efforts with the City of Atlanta and the surrounding neighborhoods to focus on connectivity, green space and the watershed in and around the Park to ensure the sustainability, enjoyability and usability of this park for generations to come.
