Welcome to our 20th anniversary program year
A message from Founder/President Mary Gordon
As we celebrate our 20th anniversary this year, it’s a time to reflect on why we do what we do - how children’s experiences around green and lavender blankets prepare them for building caring, peaceful and civil societies. Children are living in an increasingly uncertain and rapidly changing world and more than ever need safe harbour in their classrooms. Roots of Empathy allows children to understand their feelings and gives them the language to discuss how they feel. During the year, resilience builds in the children as they become more emotionally literate and skilled in perspective taking. The community of the classroom is not just an important learning environment for children in the traditional sense but with Roots of Empathy it becomes a launching pad for children to become more inclusive, more caring and empathic. Children discover our shared humanity starting with finding the humanity in their Roots of Empathy baby. This ability to find the humanity in the other is what is required on the world stage. We would all do well to listen to the wishes that tens of thousands of children have made for their Roots of Empathy baby as it could define the agenda of policy tables around the world. Our children will indeed change the world, child by child.
Aloha Hawai'i!
We are excited to announce our Hawai'i launch in Oahu and Kauai. "Roots of Empathy epitomizes the spirit of aloha and our school's theme of Ubuntu – ‘I am because of who we are.’ Ubuntu expresses humanity and kindness towards each other...we are a family who cares about each other” - Hawaiian Instructor.
You can learn more about our Hawai'i programs on our website.

Seeds of Empathy
Seeds of Empathy, our program for children ages 3 – 5 in childcare settings, is now sharing a website home with Roots of Empathy. Seeds of Empathy is an important program in 71 Indigenous communities, where Indigenous families and culture are celebrated and nurtured. In 2008 the Assembly of First Nations unanimously passed Resolution #38, publically supporting and endorsing Roots of Empathy and Seeds of Empathy as being "compatible with traditional First Nations teachings and worldviews" because they address aggression and foster empathy and social and emotional competence. Our new website now tells the story of Seeds of Empathy and Roots of Empathy, together.
