Dear Sarah,
Advent season is almost upon us. The new Church Year begins on November 28 and reminds us how our relationship with Christ should positively affect our lives. During this Advent season, think about your connection with Jesus and how that impacts your life and interactions with others.

Featured Resource: Lifting Up Our Hearts
Praying with the New Translation of the Roman Missal

As you may know, beginning in Advent 2011 all parishes will be using a new translation of the Roman Missal. In preparing parishioners for this new translation, Lifting Up Our Hearts takes advantage of this "teaching moment." Each session enhances participants' understanding of the liturgy with the result that they will experience more full, conscious, and active participation.

Through prayerful reflection on the changes to the people's parts of the Mass, this resource written by Dr. Peter J. Zografos emphasizes the role of the assembly and leads Catholics into a deeper understanding of the meaning of the Mass and its significance in their lives.

Family Faith-Sharing
Fun and Easy Way to Get Everyone Involved

Participants in small Christian communities often share good news stories with us, so we would like to pass along this fantastic story. Michelle has participated in a Why Catholic? faith-sharing group for mothers for two years in the Diocese of Fort Worth, Texas. During this time she has formed bonds, grown as an individual both socially and spiritually, and found a more meaningful relationship with God.

Not wanting to miss an opportunity to spread the Word, Michelle and her group planned a Family Rosary and potluck night at the parish. Around 35 family and friends attended for food, fellowship, and spiritual enrichment. Michelle says that the potluck-style dinner made it easy to coordinate and that everyone’s help contributed to the success of the event. It’s these seemingly small things that create small Christian communities and really impact lives.

RENEW in South Africa
Sr. Terry and Sr. Marie's Visit

Sr. Marie Cooper and Sr. Terry Rickard visited South Africa in October. They witnessed first hand how RENEW Africa is transforming lives and creating small Christian communities. The participants in the Diocese of Port Elizabeth are in Season V of RENEW Africa and are eager to continue meeting in Lent with Lenten Longings followed by Christian Prayer in the
Why Catholic? series.

Personal testimony: "The RENEW Africa program is changing lives for Christ. Many who were unable to communicate their personal experiences boldly with people are doing so now. They are willing to tell others about how good is our Savior Jesus Christ and how important it is to relate closely to Him. Evangelization is at work as was the theme of the season."
Togbe Lucas Kumadeka, parish coordinator, East London, South Africa

The RENEW Africa season on Evangelization is also encouraging others to extend their reach outside the parish. One small Christian community in St. Patrick's, East London developed a project called "Light for Hope" where they have adopted a crèche (orphanage) named Nonceba. They not only offer financial assistance to meet their basic needs, but also help the care givers and enjoy playing with the children.

Renewing Family Faith
Actions of Compassion
As the holidays draw near, remember those in need. Consider these suggestions and then share about your experiences:
  1. Clean up the yard of an elderly couple.
  2. Tutor at an elementary school that needs volunteers.
  3. Baby-sit for a parent who needs to do some shopping.
  4. Call shut-ins to chat, visit, or run errands.
  5. Volunteer at a food or clothing bank.
  6. Volunteer as a family at a local Catholic Worker house.
  7. Visit a nursing home.
  8. Conduct a school or parish clothing or food drive.
  9. Volunteer at a literacy organization to teach English as a Second Language.

Table Talk:
Family Discussion
Consider these questions and how they impact your life:

1) In what ways am I honest and compassionate? How can I become better at being this way?

2) What does it mean to "love my neighbor" at home, school, work, and in my neighborhood?
Pondering the Word
"I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another." —John 13:34

Reflect on Jesus' command of loving your neighbor. How does this fit into your daily living?
Why Catholic? Impact
"For the first time in my life, I feel like I have a parish family. I have seen the impact of my group members on the parish as they have stepped forward to volunteer and serve the parish community and God."
Nicole, Azle, Texas
All Souls Day
November 2 was All Souls Day, when we remember the faithfully departed. Here is a special prayer for this month of commemorating our loved ones:

Merciful Father,
Hear our prayers and console us. As we renew our faith in your Son, whom you raised from the dead, strengthen our hope that all our departed brothers and sisters will share in his resurrection, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
