Down with the Old, Let's Start Building the NEW!
North St. Louis County Habitat for Humanity is excited to announce this year’s second Mt. Iron groundbreaking on Sunday, August 13th!  The event, which marks the launch of Karen Kniefel’s new house build, will start at 2 p.m. at 5792 Mesabi Avenue.  There will be a short program, including an overview of the Habitat program and a short speech about the meaning of the build to the family.  Karen and her sons, Landon, Caleb and Austin, have already contributed sweat equity hours in the building of other families’ homes and are excited to get started on the construction of their own home.  Although the boys are too young to join a building crew, they have helped prepare mailings to help raise funds for all of our 2017 Habitat partner families’ homes.
When asked about her ground breaking and what it means to her, Karen said, “It will be a very special day for me and my boys. My two youngest are a little young to understand what is going on, but my oldest son is so excited. To put those shovels in the ground for the first time will be so memorable to us, and will be the start of many, many, MANY more memories to come!”  She also noted that it marks a new beginning in her family’s life:  “I am so excited to be involved in the building of my home; to be able to learn new things such as sheet-rocking, tying rebar, laying flooring, all that fun stuff. I will feel very confident in my home knowing that I am starting on a new foundation, and knowing that everything is brand new and up to code. It is such an exciting experience, for my boys to make new memories, especially! For them to know that our family, our friends, and people that we've never met before are helping us in the building of these memories will be life changing.”
