Dear Friends of The Antioch Partners (TAP),
In the TAP update last fall, I encouraged us to re-commit ourselves to obeying Jesus’ command in Matthew 9:37, “Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” I believe God intends this to be a consistent prayer focus for us all. Our work with TAP gives us the privilege of seeing God answering this prayer on a regular basis. I want to introduce you to one of these people, a TAP Partner named Lisa Alfonsi.
Partner Focus: Lisa in Peru
Lisa Alfonsi’s home church is First Presbyterian Church, River Forest, IL, and through her experience at FPC, she was challenged to consider how God was calling her to participate in his mission, both locally and globally. As a result, she participated in several short-term mission trips to Peru, and on one of those trips, in the main plaza of the ancient city of Cusco, she had a powerful sense of God’s love for the people of Peru and she sensed God was calling her to long-term, incarnational engagement there.
As an occupational therapist, Lisa has unique gifts and abilities, and God opened the way for her to move to Lima in September, 2013. She is serving under the leadership of a local church in Lima, Camino De Vida (CDV), and together with others at CDV, she is reaching out to the disability community not only in Lima, but throughout Peru. God has used Lisa and her teammates to begin new ministries and strengthen existing ones. Through these ministries individuals with special needs are being served and empowered, people are meeting Jesus, families are being encouraged and supported, and many CDV members are gaining a deeper understanding of God’s compassion for those with special needs. Lisa is a great example of someone who is using her professional skills strategically for the sake of God’s mission in the world. If you want to know more about Lisa and her work, click here (Hope – I was thinking you could connect here to Lisa’s Partner bio on the TAP website).
TAP staff member, Hope Whitney, coordinated a vision trip last month for a group (including myself!) to visit Lisa and learn about her work, meet her ministry partners, and experience some of her life and work there. Our plan is to do a vision trip like this every other year to visit TAP Partners, so if you’re interested in participating in our 2019 trip, contact Hope (email@example.com).
For the past several years, we have been prayerfully searching for the person God is calling to serve as TAP’s Operations Coordinator (this is a critical, new staff position). A number of you have been praying with us about this, and I’m excited to announce God has provided an ideally-suited person who will join our staff team here in Houston in August and take on this role. Thanks so much for praying with us, and join us in thanking God for his provision! This person and his family are currently serving in a security sensitive region in Asia, so we are not announcing his name yet, but we are eagerly awaiting his, and his family’s, arrival. This position will help us serve Partners and their sending churches more effectively, and it will also help us grow TAP to the next level.
TAP's Dinner Fundraiser Event - Save The Date!
TAP’s fifth annual dinner event will be here in Houston on September 28 at 6:30 pm at Memorial Drive PC. Our theme this year is God’s mission in West Asia. In addition to our focus on West Asia, we’ll also be celebrating TAP’s 10th anniversary. The dinner is a great way to learn more about TAP, learn about places in the world where Partners are serving and have fun giving to TAP. If you’d like to come, we have a place for you! You can register online by clicking here. If you can’t be there in person, but want to participate by giving, click here. We only do one major fundraising event each year, so pray with us for God’s blessing on the dinner!
Connecting Mission Leaders Conference- Save this Date, too!
Together with The Outreach Foundation and Frontier Fellowship (formerly, Presbyterian Frontier Fellowship), TAP will be sponsoring the next Connecting Mission Leader (CML) Conference. CML brings together congregational mission leaders from PCUSA, ECO and EPC churches to learn, worship, network and pray. The Conference will be October 26 – 28, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church in San Antonio. The keynote speaker, Dr. Miriam Adeney, is an author and Associate Professor of World Christian Studies at Seattle Pacific University. She will discuss global mission themes, including reaching out to Muslims, diaspora ministries and mission mobilization. Click here to learn more about the conference. Join us for the CML, and encourage other mission leaders in your congregation to consider coming as well!
Blessings to you all,
W. Andrew Adair
