Celebrating Energy Through Time!
Energy Through Time is a year-long project engaging young people across Scotland to uncover the past through archaeology. Funded by the Scottish Power Foundation and Historic Environment Scotland, the project explores how communities harnessed energy and natural resources - and what it means for us today. From investigating ancient sites to hands-on activities, young people are building skills, making discoveries, and connecting with history in new ways:

Shaking up History: Wet Sieving
Our brilliant volunteers recently got stuck into the messy but vital art of wet sieving with training from Harp Archaeology’s Ian Hill and our Adopt-a-Monument team. Over a few bright January days, they processed soil samples from Glendaruel and Bedrule excavations, uncovering artefacts like medieval pottery, burnt bone, and ecofacts such as charred grains and hazelnut shells. These ecofacts are key to carbon-dating and revealing the stories of our sites. Huge thanks to our volunteers for their dedication - and to Ian for fantastic training! Discover more in the blog, written by our Learning Assistant - Calypso Finch:

The Archaeology of Parklea Video
As part of their Parklea Branching Out Centre pilot, CVARF, in collaboration with Archaeology Scotland, has produced The Archaeology of Parklea: Timber Ponds and Tides. This creative short film, co-designed with Parklea clients, volunteers, and University of Glasgow students, showcases the site’s fascinating history through workshops, fieldwork, and community storytelling. Narrated by the Parklea community and featuring stunning visuals and audio, it’s a unique insight into the archaeology of Inverclyde. Thanks also to Lizzie Robertson (PhD research at UofG) as our sound specialist for the video!
The Parklea Branching Out horticultural therapy centre staff and volunteers supports a vibrant community providing a space for local ASN young people and adults to connect, develop skills and work together to run the garden centre, wellbeing and cultural programme, and - as of 2024 - cafe.
