Happy new year! It’s hard to believe that an entire month has already gone by. ICYMI at the end of the year, the Association for Professional Responsibility Lawyers (APRL) proposed revisions to Model Rule 5.4 citing a critical need for changes to this ethics rule to address the continued, inevitable involvement of non-lawyers in legal delivery systems while maintaining regulations that protect consumers. Also in late December, the Colorado Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel reported that 29 Licensed Legal Paraprofessionals had passed the November 2024 exam and would be sworn in the following month, the US District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina Southern Division granted the defendant’s motion to dismiss in the Polaski v. Lee first amendment case, and a bill relating to “the licensing of certain legal paraprofessionals” was introduced in the Texas state legislature.
