New Year, New Construction Happening on Northside DriveUtility Bridge Construction Starts January 2020! ATLANTA— Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) contractors will begin the construction of the utility bridge next month as the next phase of the ongoing Northside Drive Bridge Replacement Project. Weather and on-site conditions permitting, the work is tentatively scheduled to begin Monday, January 6. C.W. Matthews Contracting Company will implement daytime lane closures as needed on SR 3/Northside Drive near Woodward Way for the construction of the utility bridge. Motorists and residents can expect single daytime lane closures during the week between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to ensure safety for workers and drivers through the area. The construction of the 15-foot wide utility bridge, which will also become a pedestrian bridge when complete, is tentatively scheduled for completion in late summer 2020. Once the utility bridge is completed, contractors will begin phase 3 of the project and construct the new road way bridge on Northside Drive. The new bridge will have two 10-foot lanes, a 10-foot left turn lane, a 2-foot shoulder, a 4-foot bike lane, a 5-foot sidewalk on the western side from Wesley Drive to the bridge, and a 5-foot shoulder on the eastern side. The extensive overhead and underground utility relocations that began earlier this year are nearing completion, allowing this next phase of bridge work to begin. Crews will now begin removing, replacing and reconnecting the water and sewer lines that are attached to the utility bridge onto the newly constructed bridge. Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce speeds while traveling through work zones. Before heading out, get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions.
