April Arnold, ACI Executive Director
As I enter my third year as executive director of ACI, I find myself reflecting on where I began, where we were just a year ago, and where we stand today. Together, we have made meaningful progress - shifting program efforts based on need, adapting with intention to position ourselves best for what lies ahead.

Looking back on ACI’s 73-year history is a powerful reminder that we have weathered difficult moments before. Born out of necessity at a time when higher education was at a crossroads, our founders believed that by uniting around a shared mission, we could become a powerful voice, one capable of gathering untapped resources and meeting great needs. Now, we have arrived at yet another crossroad – a crossroad that needs us to do all we can to help students thrive and develop into the talent we need in Illinois.

As we close this academic year, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the incredible work happening on all our member campuses. To our funders, donors, and partners, we celebrate you for helping to make us shine, whether it is supporting students in the workforce, pursuing their education, helping with urgent financial needs, or exploring professional development opportunities. We appreciate you cheering us and them on every step of the way.

Wishing you all a summer filled with growth, opportunity, and well-earned rest! Thank you for continuing to be a part of the ACI story.

2025 Breakfast Forum: From College to Career

Pictured from left to right: Dr. Aaron Kuecker, Toby Eveland, Mikayla Zinkel, Aires Pickett, Marie Trzupek Lynch, and Shannon Fuller.

On Thursday, April 10, 2025, Associated Colleges of Illinois (ACI) hosted its annual Breakfast Forum at Saul Ewing LLP in Chicago. This year's event centered on aligning students' education with workforce readiness to enhance recruitment and retention. The forum brought together business leaders, educators, and workforce experts to explore innovative strategies for preparing students for success in today's evolving job market.

The keynote address was delivered by Aries Pickett, Director of People Operations for the National Women's Soccer League and an alumna of Eureka College. Drawing from her extensive experience in human resources within the sports industry, she emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of trust and collaboration in the workplace.

The panel discussion, moderated by Toby Eveland, Chicago Managing Partner at Saul Ewing LLP, featured distinguished professionals:
  • Shannon Fuller, Vice President of Talent Solutions at Health Care Service Corporation, shared insights on enterprise talent strategies and workforce development.
  • Dr. Aaron J. Kuecker, President of Trinity Christian College, discussed the role of liberal arts education in cultivating adaptable and career-ready graduates.
  • Marie Trzupek Lynch, Chief People Officer at Morningstar, who highlighted approaches to scaling talent strategies and building inclusive workplace cultures.
Following the panel, attendees engaged in roundtable discussions and networking sessions, fostering deeper dialogue and collaboration on aligning educational outcomes with workforce needs.

The energy and engagement of the participants made the event a tremendous success. ACI raised $63,000 in net proceeds, including over $12,000 in donations made before, during, and after the event. These funds directly support scholarships and programming for students attending ACI member schools. Notably, $2,390 of these contributions qualify as new or increased gifts toward the FY26 Council of Independent Colleges Scholarship Challenge Grant Match.

Special thanks to Coté Soerens of Coté Doodles for the graphic recordings that beautifully captured the essence of the panel discussion and keynote speech.

ACI Board Approves Budget, Re-elects Members, and Appoints New Trustee

The ACI Board of Trustees convened on April 25, 2025, to discuss a forward-thinking agenda and reflect on past activities, while leading though the upcoming year. During the meeting, the Board received a special presentation from Liz Gross, CEO of Campus Sonar, that focused on how social intelligence monitoring can impact higher education marketing, enrollment, and programming strategies. The Board also approved the appointment of Sabrina Bailey, CEO of Fiducient Advisors, as a new Trustee. Congratulations and welcome, Sabrina!

The Board of Trustees also reviewed ACI’s financial outlook, reporting a 10% increase in cash scholarship return to member schools this year, and approved a $1.2 million budget for the fiscal year. This budget reflects the continued growth by enhancing partnership opportunities with Braven to double the number of students served in the upcoming fiscal year.

In the year ahead, ACI plans to continue to amplify the visibility of all member institutions and their students through strategic digital and social media efforts, reinforcing our shared belief that education is a powerful Catalyst for Change.

These developments underscore ACI’s ongoing efforts to enhance support for students across its member colleges and universities.

The next Board of Trustees meeting will be held on Thursday, July 17, 4:00- 5:15 p.m. via Zoom.

Celebrating Bob DiMeo’s Dedicated Service
A Legacy of Impact and Generosity

Article Image
After six years of dedicated service to the Associated Colleges of Illinois, Bob DiMeo is concluding his tenure on the ACI Board of Trustees, but not his interest. His service has been marked by thoughtful leadership, generous support, and an unwavering commitment to educational access and career development for underrepresented students.

At ACI, Bob played a critical role in contributing matching funds for program challenges provided by the Council of Independent Colleges programs, focused on helping students transition successfully from college to career. He was also instrumental in helping to finance a pilot program with PROLIFIC, designed to prepare student-athletes for career success beyond college.

He consistently supported all major ACI events, including the annual Benefit Luncheon, the Breakfast Forum, and provided significant operating support throughout his term. His values are reflected in his extensive work with nonprofit organizations and his contributions to the field of fiduciary education.

Bob’s commitment to education runs deep. He and his wife, Terri, count education as one of their core giving pillars—a belief they’ve embodied throughout their continued investment in ACI’s mission.

We are deeply grateful for Bob’s leadership, mentorship, and heart for students. We thank him for helping shape a stronger, more inclusive future for higher education in Illinois, and look forward to his continued insight and friendship as an advocate of our work.
ACI "Talent Strategy Conversations" Webinar Series
A Conversation with Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC)

As part of ACI’s continued commitment to supporting member colleges and universities, the ACI Talent Strategy Conversations webinar series is designed to strengthen connections between our institutions and corporate partners. In response to member school requests, the series aims to share valuable engagement opportunities with campus leaders and employers to provide value to students transitioning into the workforce.

In April, ACI welcomed Shannon Fuller, Vice President of Talent Solutions at Health Care Service Corporation (Blue Cross Blue Shield), as our featured guest. Shannon shared valuable insights into what HCSC looks for when reviewing applications from soon-to-be graduates—and how students can best position themselves for success.

Key Takeaways:
A degree is the baseline, but standing out matters more.
    • Showcase unique skills such as fluency in other languages or cultural experiences abroad.
    • Highlight experiences beyond the classroom that demonstrate initiative and value.
Internships matter—plan ahead!
    • HCSC has a strong record of converting interns into full-time employees.
    • Internship applications open up to a year in advance, so don’t delay.
Employers value “stickiness.”
    • Show that you’re ready to commit to the company for at least two years.
    • This helps build continuity and culture.
Real-world examples make you memorable.
    • Share stories of how you’ve applied your skills—through internships, class projects, or
       personal challenges.
    • Be honest about setbacks.
    • How did you solve a problem or grow from a difficult experience?
 Continuous learners stand out.
    • Companies want team members eager to grow.
    • Talk about skills you’re developing or excited to pursue further.
 Emotional intelligence is a must.
    • Adaptability, collaboration, and cultural fit are critical.
    • Demonstrate your ability to thrive in team-based environments.

Looking Ahead:
Stay tuned for more ACI Talent Strategy Conversations coming in Fall 2025. These sessions will continue to equip students with tools, insights, and connections to succeed in today’s evolving job market.
ACI Launches "Meeting the Moment" Initiative with CIC Grant Support

The Associated Colleges of Illinois (ACI) is proud to announce the launch a new project funded through a Meeting the Moment grant from the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC). This program is designed to support presidents and senior leaders of ACI member institutions as they navigate the evolving landscape of higher education, particularly in light of recent executive orders and regulatory changes that impact small and mid-sized private colleges.

Through a series of ACI webinars and in-person convenings, "Meeting the Moment" will provide a platform for institutional leaders to engage in in-depth discussions on how these developments affect strategic planning, funding, and operations. By fostering collaboration and shared insights, the initiative aims to equip ACI member institutions with the tools and knowledge necessary to proactively address challenges and uphold the distinct value of independent higher education.

Peer Mentoring in Action
Illinois College Students Explore Chicago

Students from the ACI-supported Peer Mentoring Program at Illinois College in Jacksonville, IL, wrapped up the academic year with a memorable trip to Chicago, filled with discovery, connection, and a little magic.

The trip offered more than sightseeing—it celebrated the growth and camaraderie fostered through a year of mentorship. ACI is proud to support programs that build community, confidence, and unforgettable experiences for students across Illinois.

One of the highlights included attending the grand opening of the Harry Potter store, where students immersed themselves in the wizarding world. For many, it was their first time navigating the city like locals, riding public transportation and exploring neighborhoods with confidence, thanks to mentor Jocelyn Lagunas Vargas, a Chicago native who thoughtfully planned the route.

We're Building a Stronger Future—One Student at a Time.
From Financial Freeze to Future FBI Agent – A Journey Fueled by Grit and ACI Support

Mikayla Zinkel, a senior at Elmhurst University, exemplifies the resilience and determination that define so many first-generation college students. She is pursuing a double major in Criminal Justice and Biology, along with minors in Communications, Sociology, and Psychology. A transfer student from McHenry County College, where she graduated as valedictorian, Mikayla arrived at Elmhurst with strong academic credentials but limited financial resources.

Article Image
Despite her achievements, financial barriers threatened to derail her college journey. At one point, a six-month financial hold placed her enrollment at risk. Thanks to the generosity of ACI donors, Mikayla received the support she needed to clear that obstacle and remain in school. Recalling the moment she received the news, she said, “I remember looking at my advisor’s email saying I was off a financial hold… I actually started sobbing. I finally caught up enough that I didn’t have to work 40 hours a week to continue my education.”

Now in her final semester, Mikayla is focused on the future—one that includes graduate school, a Ph.D., and a career in law enforcement. Her ultimate goal is to serve as a police officer, work her way up to the FBI, and eventually teach criminal justice to inspire students from backgrounds like her own.

Mikayla’s story is a powerful reminder that ACI scholarships do more than support education—they create futures filled with promise and purpose.   Mikayla’s journey is just one example of how your generosity can change a life. Every contribution to ACI helps remove financial barriers, empowering first-generation and underserved students to stay in school, graduate, and pursue meaningful careers.

We are halfway to meeting our $20,000 CIC Scholarship Challenge goal! Join us in creating more stories like Mikayla’s—make a gift today and be a part of their success.  Help us now to empower more students at ACI member schools:  https://www.acifund.org/giving.
