Educating students and communities about the connections between the ocean, inland water, and economy of Maine.
Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for your support of Herring Gut! This year we look forward to building off the momentum of last year's generous giving. State and federal grants are never guaranteed, it is your help that consistently makes an impact. We stand strong during challenging times with your support.
In January, we took our science show on the road to the Rockland Library and Hope Elementary. Several new school districts have signed up for our classes that range from one hour at Herring Gut or in the classroom to six weeks of coordinated and holistic curriculum. Our summer camps are filling up too. Check them out on our website. Our four- and five-day camps are grounded in science, exploration, and adventure with kayaking, a visit to Colby College’s facility on Allen Island, and salty science on the “Morning in Maine” sailboat out of Rockland.
We are staying warm and well informed in Port Clyde this winter with “Cabin Fever” community potlucks featuring speakers on microplastics and coastal erosion. Our speaker for March is Dr. Lauren Rice from the University of Florida who will illuminate the world of deep-sea creatures. February is a time for love, and we will explore “love under the sea” for marine creatures in a special pop-up event on campus with “Wintern” Hazel Raggozzine of Bennington College.
We also are offering a February Open House for students and families on February 20th from 10-2 during school vacation week. Join us for some marine science crafts, aquaponics, and a touch tank tour. We are adding new tanks for our creatures and upgrading our aquaponics systems. Come on by to breathe in the verdant air in our greenhouse and say hello to our blue crab “Feisty.” We are open 8-4 Monday through Friday. You will always learn something at Herring Gut while connecting to our coastal community and the creatures and people who depend on it. The Sea, the Future, and Us!
Herring Gut has been busy gearing up for 2025 programs! In January, we had a touch tank meet-and-greet with the Giving Tree Learning Center in Camden, an Aquatots program at Rockland Public Library, a GMRI Coastal Meetup, and a Cabin Fever lecture on microplastics with our special guest, Dr. Charles Rolsky, from the Shaw Institute! We’re planning some new plastics programming for our partner North Haven students at the Farnsworth Arts in the Intersection program.
Some upcoming February events include our pop-up Valentine’s Day program with our ‘Wintern’ Hazel Ragozzine, the Winter Open house on Feb. 20th, and more Aquatots library programs! Stay tuned for more exciting new community events and programs; this year we’re doubling down on STEM and art integration!
Summer camp and program registration are OPEN! And don’t forget–we’re open Mondays to Fridays year-round from 8-4 for walk-in touch tank tours.
