Educating students and communities about the connections between the ocean, inland water, and economy of Maine.
Happy July! I can't believe it's been 7 months since I arrived at Herring Gut. We are so appreciative of your support at our 25th anniversary event and ice cream social. The warm and sunny day was a perfect start to our busy season and an incredible reminder of Phyllis Wyeth's legacy and the good things that happen when science and education meet the joyfulness of children. We look forward to announcing the winners of the Phyllis Wyeth Visionary Award on August 7th at our "An Evening of Fresh to Salt" event. Tickets are going fast, make sure to reserve yours soon. We are offering three programs weekly through July and August, Tidepool Treks on Mondays and Fridays, Ocean Hour on Wednesdays, and Aquatots on Thursdays. Come have a great time and meet our new summer educators, Ava Travis, Paul Leoni, Lilith Meng, and Marley Wilkinson.
All of our day camps for middle school and high school students are filled and we are deeply grateful to the grant support from the Maine Outdoor Learning Initiative. These students are learning about the marine world and marine trades while doing experiments in Turkey Cove with soft-shell clams, traveling to Allen Island to learn about Colby College research, and utilizing oceanographic methods on trips with "A Morning in Maine: Science Under Sail" collaborator, Captain Tyler Waterson. Our touch tanks tours are offered Monday-Friday from 9-12 and 1-4. Everyone has been extremely welcoming to me, I hope we can share some of the warmth and enthusiasm with you. Look for us with our touch tanks later this month at the Rockland Maritime Heritage Days, scheduled for July 19-20, 2024 and at St George Days from 9-1 at 47 Main Street.
Lastly, Herring Gut is a co-sponsor of the #portclydetrong photography exhibit on display July - October from 8am-7pm on the second floor of the Monhegan Boat Line and throughout Port Clyde. Special thanks to Cheryl Clegg Photography for capturing the resiliency of those who work and live in Port Clyde.
