Educating students and communities about the connections between the ocean, inland water, and economy of Maine.
Summer is here! We are looking forward to welcoming our summer camp attendees while finishing up our school visits for June. We are open from 9am - 12pm and 1pm - 4pm Monday through Friday for free tours and visits with our touch tank animals. We are especially excited about our 25th Anniversary Celebration which will include friends and alumni enjoying Village Ice Cream and tours of our facility. If you are in the area please drop by our campus on June 20th from 4-6 pm to celebrate with us. We also will be having our signature "An Evening of Fresh to Salt" event on August 7th at SaltWater Fields. Tickets are now on sale and won't last long! We are still accepting business sponsor for the event, please contact Sally Crusan at scrusan@herringgut.org.
Thanks to a generous gift from The Wyeth Foundation, we are presenting the inaugural Phyllis Wyeth Visionary Award at our August event. We will recognize two people who have contributed to the field of aquatic science and/or marine trades in a way that exemplifies Herring Gut Coastal Science Center's vision and the legacy and innovation of founder Phyllis Wyeth. You can make a nomination, or nominate yourself via this link. This special recognition comes with a $1,500.00 award and a feature on our website.
In the midst of a joyous summer and celebrations, we do need to remind you that without your help, all the great work we do cannot happen. This past year we have provided 15,000 contact hours of hands-on education in the schools and on site. Our fiscal year ends June 30th and we are still $25,000 short of our year-end fundraising goals. If you are able to contribute, we would be most grateful. We have been growing exponentially and are already booking schools and library visits for 2025. We have raised more than ever before in grant funding with close to $400,000 received in FY 2024. You can help us ensure that no child in the area goes without a chance to learn about the ocean world and the marine trades by contributing what you can before June 30th.
