Tis the season to be . . .
I have always loved the snow, particularly how it makes everything sparkle as it covers the streets, buildings, cars, buses, and even the trees. I spent countless hours having snowball fights, catching snowflakes on my tongue, making snow angels and snow people, or looking out of the window in amazement of how something could so quickly change my surroundings.
Walking in fresh snow was always a treat. I could leave an imprint in the snow announcing that I was here! I also took notice of the footprints left in the snow by others. Some big. Some small. Some were in a straight line, while others created this zig zag-like pattern on the sidewalk. I would try to step in those footprints as I made my way through the snow.
There are times in life when we will get the opportunity to either leave footprints, and impression or imprint, or benefit from those left by others. At Uplift, we strive to do just that! Offering free peer support groups, and providing free emotional and grief support via our Philly HopeLine are ways Uplift Clinicians support families as they navigate this journey called grief.
As we embark on this holiday season, decide how you will leave your mark. For tis the season to be Uplifting!
In appreciation, Crystal Wortham, MSW, LCSW

Uplift's 2022 Annual Appeal: Help Us Meet our Board's Match!
|
 |
For nearly 25 years, Uplift has been an essential resource for children and their caregivers; supporting them with free grief groups aimed at creating environments for healing, building resilience, and honoring loved ones. These indispensable services are essential tools in the continuum of mental health care and provide vital opportunities for young people to process loss and name trauma in their lives.
The Board of Directors at Uplift has put forward a $10,000 match. All gifts made during our appeal campaign (now until the end of the year, 12/31/22) will be matched 1:1 up to $10,000—doubling your impact!
Please consider joining us in this fall campaign. Regrettably, grief services have become all the more necessary over the past few years, particularly here in Philadelphia where we’ve witnessed the devastating impact of overlapping crises. Your support today is imperative. Wishing you the best for the season ahead, Christopher Barrett Politan Interim Executive Director |

Uplift in the News
|
 |
 | Youth and adults in the LGBTQIA+ community experience grieving processes linked to a very different kind of loss. In recognition of LGBT History Month in October, Uplift's Queer and Trans Youth Services clinicians Sam Middleton, MS and CJ Roseberry, MSW co-wrote an editorial with board member Elliott Wilson for the Philadelphia Gay News. Through sharing their own experiences with loss, they write about how their own identities affirmed their commitment to creating support systems for queer and trans youth grieving deaths of loved ones, identity changes, ambiguous loss, and community loss. | | | |
 |
 | Associate Director Teresa Méndez-Quigley, MSW and Director of Operations Adriana Rivera, MSL are co-authors of an essay which explores the importance of a supportive community for grieving children in Philadelphia's Latino community. Children grieve differently from adults; Latino children may experience not only grief after the death of a loved one, but also community grief and ambiguous loss. Teresa and Adriana highlight the value of community care within the Latino community, whether from school counselors, church leaders, neighbors, or caregivers. There are ways to be a resource for grieving children by referring them to counseling or connecting them with grief support, including the bilingual grief support options available at Uplift. | | |
