Growing up in Philly, autumn was a time of anticipating new changes: cooler weather, a return to school, and the possibility of new friends.  This year, I saw my son experience a similar transition to a new school for 7th grade, hoodies for morning bus rides, and a crop of new friends.  These intergenerational cycles of transitions are repeated each year by tens of thousands of youths.

At Uplift, our Fall cycles have begun as well.  Clinicians are carrying supply bags to offer grief support groups to students at 15 schools and at the Philadelphia Juvenile Justice Services Center.  In Family Services, clinicians are offering a hybrid of evening services: peer-support groups, family-based models, and in-person offerings.  Our Philly HopeLine continues to be the portal to all our services and the new data warehousing system makes it run smoother.

As you reach for that pumpkin latte or warm apple cider, know that we are committed to bringing warmth into the classrooms, to children’s homes, and at our offices through activities, discussions, and games so that no child grieves alone.  I am grateful to Uplift supporters who allow us to do this meaningful work.

In appreciation,
Teresa Méndez-Quigley, MSW
Associate Director at Uplift since 2015

In Grief, Everything Is Connected:
Uplift's 2022 Appeal Campaign

Give Today

In grief, everything is connected, and grief connects all of us. As a supporter of Uplift Center for Grieving Children, your connection to us may be personally shaped by your own grief journey. Like the children and families who attend Uplift’s programs, you may have also lost a parent or caregiver while you were still a child.

Your connections to grief likely include a constellation of supports. As part of Uplift's 2022 Appeal, we’ve created an infographic of the systems and supports in Philadelphia that intersect for the children and families in Uplift’s grief groups. We've attached it to this message as a download for you to easily share with friends.
Today, we invite you to connect with Uplift and with the work we’ve accomplished since our founding in 2000. Your donations enable us to act as a connector and uplifter for grieving children and families in Philadelphia.

Uplift Celebrates
Hispanic Heritage Month
Held every year from Septemeber 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month commemorates the histories, languages, traditions, values, and contributions of people with ancestors in Latin America. In celebration, Uplift's Español clinicians and interns prepared a playlist centered on the theme of Esperanza (Hope) that features uplifting songs by Spanish-speaking musical artists, as well as a series of inspirational quotes.

Uplift offers grief groups for families who speak Spanish at home throughout the year. Our next Español cycle takes place from November 10 – December 15 and will be facilitated on Zoom by Spanish-speaking clinicians. If you or a family you know are interested in signing up, call the Philly HopeLine at 1-833-745-4673.

Uplift in the News
Uplift clinician Samantha Anthony, MS, NCC authored an essay on how educators can distinguish grief from ADHD for Experience Camps, a nonprofit that offers one-week overnight summer camp and year-round programs at no cost to grieving children. Samantha also spoke with Mike DeNardo on KYW Newsradio as part of their program I'm Listening, in which she discussed how to address grief and loss with young children.
Uplift clinician Jasmine Allen, MA, E-RYT, SEP was interviewed by reporter Kristen A. Graham for the Philadelphia Inquirer as part of a story on the impact of the shooting outside Willard Elementary on families in Kensington. Jasmine spoke about the effects of exposure to violence in your own neighborhood, particularly how it can cause children to experience traumatic stress.
