Lent is a time of giving up and a time of letting go, a time of leaving behind and a time of stepping forward. It is a time of returning to God and moving more consciously in synch with God’s way. Jesus is the way. A friend once said to me, “Terry, you are either on the way or in the way.” Lent is an opportunity for all of us to be on the way, led by God’s grace – acting justly, loving tenderly, and walking humbly with our God (Micah 6:8).
May this Lenten season lead us through the desert of longing and desolation and into fullness of life and the consolation of God’s merciful love.
Blessings on your journey,
Sr. Theresa Rickard, O.P., D.Min.
President & Executive Director
Hermana Theresa Rickard, O.P., D.Min.
Presidente y Directora Ejecutiva
Tender God of the garden and the desert,
you give life graciously as overflowing gift.
You pour out your lavish grace on us
even when we see and feel you not.
Give us the courage to let ourselves be led by you
to those places and persons where you wait to meet us.
Open our hearts and lives to your quiet and unsettling stirrings.
Come to us in both the ache and the awe of our human journeys.
In the company of one another,
deepen our faith to see that in each discovery of another,
we discover you, and each time we recognize you, our Father,
we come to know a little more of our true selves.
We place ourselves in one another's keeping
and together praise you, through, with,
and in the Spirit of Jesus, now and forever. Amen.

Stockton Diocese Comes Together
The Stockton Diocese is truly participating in spiritual renewal: from parishes to campuses and even prisons, individuals are encountering God in everyday life!
Manuel Hernandez and Sr. Maureen Colleary, FSP, presenters for RENEW International, visited Stockton, California, in January to help parishes prepare for ARISE Together in Christ Season 2
faith-sharing. Parishioners participating in ARISE
are sharing the Good News by raising funds to purchase faith-sharing books for inmates at area correctional facilities and by volunteering their time as leaders of small groups of incarcerated individuals. These resources help facilitate spiritual growth along their personal journey of reconciliation and provide an atmosphere for Christ to take root in their lives.
If you would like to help by donating funds to purchase books for others in need, please click here

Praying with the Third Edition of the Roman Missal
Adding to our extensive library of small Christian community resources, we’ve created an ideal process to welcome the Third Edition of the Roman Missal into parishes and into parishioners’ spiritual lives. Lifting Up Our Hearts: Praying with the Third Edition of the Roman Missal is a six-session small-group faith-sharing process which results in parishioners experiencing more full, conscious, and active participation in the liturgy.
This an historic moment in the Church! The implementation of the Third Edition of the Roman Missal has the potential to enrich spiritual lives and the way we worship. RENEW International makes it easy to implement in parishes with a variety of invitational tools and resources including a specially written faith-sharing book, a companion music CD, pew cards, buttons, and customizable posters and flyers. The faith-sharing book and pew cards are also available in large print edition. Register for a free informational webinar or order your copy today by visiting www.renewintl.org/missal.

Touching Lives Around the World
Sister Pascal, SJC, in Haiti has been working closely with RENEW International while educating youth in Haiti. During the day, Sr. Pascal teaches high school students in the morning and elementary school students in the afternoon in UNICEF tents. Although she stays quite busy, she manages to find time to translate Why Catholic? into Haitian Creole to help facilitate adult learning and growth in the Catholic faith through small Christian communities.
Please continue to pray for Haiti—it is still difficult despite some reasons to hope. We are grateful that the Sisters manage to stay well in the midst of it all and carry on the mission.

Family Activities for Renewal
To fully experience Lent, consider doing something you have never done before in addition to giving-up something. Here are some suggestions:
- Each day learn one new thing and share it with your family.
- Try a new ethnic food and discuss it.
- Plant seeds for a new flower or vegetable.
- Read about a person in history who nurtured the hope of new life,
e.g., Oscar Romero, Nelson Mandela, or Aung San Suu Kyi.
- Tell your family about this person.
- Make something you never made before and give it as a gift.
- Help at a soup kitchen or shelter.
- Examine your spiritual life through prayer, faith-sharing groups,
lectures or retreats.
- Take a nature walk with your family to enjoy God's creation.
- Bring a plant or flowers to a shut-in.
- Do some spring cleaning yard work for an elderly neighbor.
