'Let It Go, Start Again'

Dear Friend,

We have rung in another new year. I am an optimist and I believe in making resolutions for a better, fuller, holier, and healthier life in 2014. But I struggle with the truth that I have made many resolutions in the past and by the end of the month many of these resolutions have dissolved.

RENEW Publishes Co-Founder's Memoir

Beyond My Wildest Dreams Now Available

In the midst of the turbulent ‘60s, two young priests shared a vision of a Church revitalized by lay men and women turning their faith into acts of charity and justice inside and outside their parishes. That vision became a reality, first as a pastoral office in the Archdiocese of Newark and then as an organization that grew into RENEW International. Now, one of those priests, Father Tom Kleissler, who directed RENEW for more than 30 years, relives the exciting and often turbulent events that have carried RENEW literally around the world. Relive that story with Father Tom in his memoir, Beyond My Wildest Dreams: From Local Ministry to Worldwide Mission.

Archbishop Bernard Hebda Visits RENEW

RENEW International welcomed Archbishop Bernard Hebda to our Plainfield, NJ, headquarters Jan. 6. The co-adjutor archbishop celebrated Mass in our chapel for members of our board of trustees and staff and then joined us for lunch. He will assist and eventually succeed Archbishop Joseph J. Myers in the Archdiocese of Newark.

Ginny's story
'I Love Jesus'—Ginny's Story

A woman who feels distanced from the Church due to her life’s circumstances seeks spiritual healing in many places. She finds Jesus’ love in her local parish when she recognizes she is among other “saints and sinners.”

To hear Ginny's story, click here.

Ginny's story is part of a new video series from RENEW International entitled Turning Points: Witness Stories. The videos offer a way to help parishioners start a dialogue about faith with family and friends who have left the Church or who are religious “seekers.”

A video series is also available in Spanish as Cambios de rumbos: Historias de testigos.

ARISE Group Sticks Together, Continues to Share Faith With Technology

It would take more than a few hundred miles in this digital age to break up a faith-sharing group in Texas. That point was made by a small Christian community in St. Mary's Parish in Odessa, a city located in the Diocese of San Angelo.

Young Adults Respond to ARISE Invitation Via Facebook

Anyone seeking a concrete example of the new evangelization can find one in Sebree, a little city in northwestern Kentucky. That’s where Patti Gutiérrez discovered how an invitation via digital media could have unexpected results, touching not only active members of a parish but also Catholics who had stopped participating in the life of the church.

Looking Ahead to Lent

RENEW International invites all small groups and parishes to make a six-week retreat by exploring the Sunday readings of Lent with our Lenten Longings series.

This year’s readings and reflections cover the theme Let Yourself Be which reminds us of Christ’s teaching that authentic loving involves self-surrender.

Also for Lent 2014, RENEW’s Sr. Terry offers daily Lenten reflections drawn from her unique perspective and diverse ministry background in a pocket-sized devotional prayer book entitled The Living Gospel, available now.

Order these and other Lenten resources by Jan. 15, 2014 to take advantage of Early Bird specials by calling our order line at 1-888-433-3221.

Large-Print Editions Available in English, Spanish

Did you know that RENEW International publishes large-print editions of its faith-sharing resources for Why Catholic? and ARISE Together in Christ (¿Por qué ser católico? and LEVÁNTATE. Unámonos en Cristo)? Thanks to the generous support of the Lavelle Foundation for the Blind, RENEW is pleased to offer large-print editions of our English and Spanish faith-sharing resources formatted specifically for low-vision audiences.

Sr. Terry Rickard, OP, president and executive director of RENEW International, credited the Lavelle Foundation with enabling RENEW to provide large-print faith-sharing books.

“This is a major step toward creating a more inclusive experience for low-vision Catholics who desire to be part of an adult faith-formation program in their parishes. We are grateful to the Lavelle Fund for the Blind’s support of this project,” Sr. Terry said.

“Providing our books in large print is a way of evangelizing to a wider audience and calling attention to the care and inclusion of the visually impaired in parish life. This project has helped RENEW to appreciate the amount of work, care, and focus needed to produce high-quality large-print books. We are not simply enlarging the type but essentially creating the book in a new language.”

To order large-print resources, visit our online bookstore or call 1-888-433-3221.
