A Church on the Street

It is true that going out on to the street implies the risk of accidents happening, as they would to any ordinary man or woman. But if the church stays wrapped up in itself, it will age. And if I had to choose between a wounded church that goes out on to the streets and a sick, withdrawn church, I would definitely choose the first one. Pope Francis

Dear ,

I hope you are enjoying these summer days. The quote above is one of the first quotes from Pope Francis that captured my heart and imagination. It envisions a church in the midst of the people—a church visible to those on the “outskirts.” It brought to mind Sr. Lauria, a member of my Dominican congregation, who ran a mobile kitchen from a van.

Jesus in Everyday Life

“See, I am doing a new thing! ... do you not perceive it?” —Isaiah 43:18

If anything could add to the joy of the Easter vigil, it would be the unlikely occasion of three couples beginning their lives together in matrimony. And that’s exactly what happened last Easter when three couples were married during the vigil Mass at Santos Ángeles Custodios Parish in the Archdiocese of Valencia in Venezuela. The extraordinary occasion was the direct result of RENEW International’s faith-sharing process, ¿Por qué ser católico? (Why Catholic?), through which small Christian communities explore the teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

'God Is Somewhere in This'—Bob's Story

In this modern-day conversion story, a man shares that he grappled with anxiety and depression since his youth. After marrying his college sweetheart and joining the Catholic faith through RCIA, he began to encounter Christ on a personal level. His parish priest helped him to see that his struggles were actually drawing him closer to God.

Bob's story is part of a new video series from RENEW International entitled Turning Points: Witness Stories. The videos offer a way to help parishioners start a dialogue about faith with family and friends who have left the Church or who are religious “seekers.” The video series is also available in Spanish as Cambios de rumbos: Historias de testigos.

Justice Flows From Faith: New Resources

Fr. Allan Deck SJ
As LEVÁNTATE. Unámonos en Cristo drew to a close in the Diocese of Stockton, diocesan leaders sought to continue to engage the large, vibrant Latino population in a way that would help Latinos connect the Catholic faith to social action.

Working with noted author and pastoral leader Fr. Allan Figueroa Deck, SJ, RENEW International developed La Justicia brota de la fe: Formación en la fe y la Doctrina Social de la Iglesia (Justice Flows from Faith: Formation in the Faith and the Social Doctrine of the Church). In June, RENEW's Manuel Hernandez presented this initiative to an enthusiastic gathering of leaders from Stockton’s Spanish-speaking parish communities. Parishioners will soon be signing up for small communities to begin their faith-sharing experience in October.
