Pope Says Relax, Don't Be a Sourpuss

Dear ,
Two of my favorites among the memorable statements Pope Francis has made so far are the encouragement to relax more and his observation that sourpusses hurt the church's witness and mission. I know that when I do not have enough leisure time I become a sourpuss. So as the summer begins I pledge to take more leisure time, have lots more fun, and spend more time with family and friends. To read my blog, click here.

Family Tragedy Distanced Her From
Her Faith, ARISE Brought Her Home
 Article Image
Christine Schneider grew up in a home touched by Catholic faith. She attended Mass, received religious instruction, and at times prayed the rosary with her family. When she moved away to attend school, her interest in her faith began to wane. Then the sudden death of her brother made her angry with God and her religious practice at best amounted to going through the motions. But something changed all that: an invitation to lead a small group in faith sharing with ARISE Together in Christ from RENEW International. To read about how life has changed for Christina, click here.

Thanks to the support of our donors, RENEW International’s 14th Annual Gala raised more than $230,000. These funds will allow RENEW to increase its presence in more parishes in the United States, Latin America, Africa and Canada.

"We Had to Trust": Tom and Amy's Story

A series of devastating miscarriages made it hard for Amy to sit through Mass because “one phrase in a reading, a verse in a song would just make me burst out in tears.” She tried talking to a priest. “It wasn’t right for me not to go to Mass. But I just couldn’t do it.” For Tom, skipping Mass was more problematic. He recognized the importance of staying connected to God in good times and in bad. Then Amy discovered she was pregnant again. Torn between the the hope that this time she would have a baby and fear that she would miscarry again, she visited a friend from work. Find out how a prayer experience drew her into an encounter with Christ that changed her life.

Tom and Amy's story is part of a new video series from RENEW Intenational. The videos offer a way to help parishioners start a dialogue about faith with family and friends who have left the Church or who are religious “seekers.”

Turning Points: Witness Stories tell real-life stories of people who have experienced awakened faith and new life as Catholics. These short, engaging videos in English and Spanish encourage sharing and discussion.

Parish ministries will also find many uses for these videos, for example incorporating them in sacramental preparation and RCIA and sharing them through YouTube, Facebook, and email.

RENEW International received generous support for this project from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Catholic Communications Campaign and the Our Sunday Visitor Foundation. Visit www.renewintl.org/turningpoints.
