Dear RENEW Friend,
I have always loved the season of Lent. For me, it is a time to refocus on God and get my life in right order. As a child I thought Lent was about giving up things like candy and fighting with my sister, Mary. I have come to realize that it is not about giving up but about seizing the opportunity to be all that God has called me to be—a holy, healthy, and loving person. See the five things not to do this Lent in my RENEW blog post.

May you be moved this Lent by a deep desire for a new heart and a new spirit, and may God answer your prayer.

Lenten Blessings,
Sr. Theresa Rickard, OP, DMin
President and Executive Director

Estimado/a Amigo/a,

Hermana Theresa Rickard, OP, DMin
Presidente y Directora Ejecutiva

Lenten Longings Prayer
Take me by the hand

Spirit of God, source of all truth and judgment,
who alone can undo the powers that grip our world,
in our times of temptation, give us your discernment.

When we are drowning in self concern, save us by your grace.

Call us this Lent to genuine conversion of heart.

Make us bearers of the Good News in our words and deeds.

Take us by the hand and lead us, Holy Spirit of God,
into the ways of peace. Amen.

How a Foundation Helped RENEW Launch Faith-Sharing Program in South America

A big reason for RENEW's success in bringing its faith-sharing mission abroad is its ability to inculturate programs for the local population. RENEW Proyecto América Latina: Venezuela is the inculturation of RENEW's successful Why Catholic?/¿Por que ser catolico? process, which offers a concrete approach to help adults deepen their Catholic faith and connect its teachings to their everyday lives.

A generous grant from the Vollmer Family Foundation allowed RENEW to launch the program in the Archdiocese of Valencia in Venezuela. More than 1,000 people have participated in each of RENEW's faith-enrichment workshops throughout the archdiocese.

“We’re so grateful to Ana Luisa Estrada de Wallis and Ana Velutini de Wallis of the Vollmer Foundation,” said Sr. Terry Rickard, OP, president of RENEW International. “For more than five years the Vollmer family has been helping RENEW evangelize the Catholics of Venezuela through faith formation and Catholic leadership development.”

Renewing Family Faith

Searching for God's Presence

We know as followers of Jesus we are called to listen to and care for the poor in our midst. As a family, choose an action to this end.
Some suggestions:
-Collect food for a local hunger center.
-Volunteer your time at a local food kitchen or homeless shelter.
-Organize a food waste campaign or coat drive at your school.
-Join a hunger action group.

This Why Catholic? group in Wiesbaden, Germany, donated gifts to a homeless shelter. What is your call to action?

As part of your plan to "do something" this Lent, consider donating to RENEW. Your tax-deductible donation to RENEW International helps us engage more people to strengthen their faith and find God in everyday life.

Lenten Recipe for You

Try this delicious Lenten Frittata:

1-1/2 tbsp. butter
1 medium zucchini, diced
5 large eggs
1/3 c. milk
1/2 tsp. dried basil or 1 1/2 chopped fresh basil
Salt and pepper to taste
2 c. cooked spaghetti
1 (14 oz.) can artichoke hearts, drained and coarsely chopped
1/2 c. shredded part-skim mozzarella

Heat half the butter in a large ovenproof skillet over medium high heat. Add zucchini and saute until tender and starting to brown, about six minutes.

Whisk eggs, milk, basil, salt, and pepper in large bowl. Stir in the spaghetti, artichoke hearts, and zucchini.

Melt remaining butter in the same skillet over low heat. Add the egg mixture, cover, and cook until the eggs are almost set, about ten minutes.

Sprinkle cheese over the top and broil until golden brown. Cut in wedges. Serves four or so.

Enjoy!
