RENEW responds to the scandal
Article Image
Like most Catholics, I have been angry and shamed by the scandal of sexual abuse by clergy and coverups by bishops. For a time, I wanted to disassociate myself from the scandal, but I have had many opportunities to hear firsthand how this scandal is affecting Catholic women and men as well as innocent clergy. I came to believe that I had to be part of a positive response. My colleagues at RENEW felt the same way. The result, after several months of work by RENEW staff and advisors, is a faith-sharing resource for small groups, Healing Our Church, and its Spanish-language counterpart, Sanando Nuestra Iglesia. We at RENEW hope that these resources will contribute healing, reform, and renewal of the Church we all love so much.

Healing Our Church introduced in Allentown
Article Image As Sister Terry wrote in her greeting, RENEW has responded to the sexual-abuse scandal in the Church by providing a small-group resource, including scripture and prayer, that offers Catholic women and men an opportunity to confront the truth of abuse and coverup, share their personal reactions, and find a way forward in the Church that is, after all, all of us—the Body of Christ.
Healing Our Church and Sanando Nuestra Iglesia were introduced this Lent in the Diocese of Allentown, Pennsylania. A parish leader there called the launch "hugely successful" and wrote,"They laughed, cried, listened, and some vented their anger respectfully, but everyone left each session wanting to return."

Catholics in South Africa are currently faith-sharing in small groups with several RENEW resources.
  • The diocese of Port Elizabeth has just introduced Book 3 of Luke: My Spirit Rejoicespart of the RENEW Scripture Series—for use during the Lent and Easter Seasons. The book has been translated into Afrikaans and isiXhosa, and translation of Matthew: Come Follow Me is now in progress.
  • Small groups in the Archdioceses of Johannesburg and Pretoria are using LIVE LENT for liturgical Year C.
  • The Diocese of Klerksdorp has just started Season One of RENEW Africa.
  • Small groups in the Diocese of Manzini in the Kingdom of Swaziland—a tiny enclave within the borders of the Republic of South Africa—are planning for faith-sharing with Season 2 of RENEW Africa later in the year.
  • Workshops in preparation for Lent were held in the dioceses of Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Klerksdorp. LIVE LENT workshop participants at St. Anthony's Parish in Uitenhage are shown in the photo above.
