RENEW marks anniversary and plans an exciting future

Article Image
Life begins at forty, according to an old saying, and I'm adopting that phrase as the motto for RENEW International, as we look ahead to our fifth decade of ministry to Catholic men and women and their parishes in the United States, Canada, South Africa, the Caribbean and beyond. The theme of our anniversary year has been "Forward at Forty," and that's where I believe RENEW will go—forward to provide Catholics of all ages with new and exciting opportunities to share their faith, put it into practice in everyday life, and pass it on to succeeding generations.

Creation at the Crossroads bearing fruit in Annapolis
Article Image
A parish in Maryland has formed a team to take concrete steps to raise awareness of environmental issues and improve the environment in practical ways. It has all grown out of seven small faith-sharing groups at St. Andrew by the Bay Parish in Annapolis that participated in Creation at the Crossroads, a resource from RENEW International.

In the photo at left, children at an Earth Day event visit a display about the importance of pollinating plants. More about this parish.

Live Lent! cover photo hit the spot for this engineer
Article Image
When RENEW International chose a crosswalk as the cover photo on our Live Lent! series, we weren’t trying to appeal to traffic engineers in particular. Little did we know.

That cover did the trick for traffic engineer Kathleen Swindler, who spotted the book in the narthex of her parish church. She saw the crossroad image as “a pavement marking from God.” Kathleen says she was hesitant about joining a small faith-sharing group, but not anymore!  Kathleen tells her story.

LEVANTATE keeps up momentum in Brooklyn parishes
ARISE Together in Christ and its Spanish-language equivalent, LEVÁNTATE Unámonos en Cristo, have been received with great enthusiasm in parishes in the Diocese of Brooklyn. For example, Angelica Taveras, pastoral/youth ministry coordinator at Blessed Sacrament Church, reports that the parish had one LEVÁNTATE group in Season 4 that consisted only of couples who found that the process advanced their journey of faith and helped strengthen their marriages. Angelica said many who had participated in previous seasons of LEVÁNTATE weren’t hesitant to sign up again.

Toronto nun wants a Church in touch with young adults
Article Image "I never knew I would have so much fun with nuns in a bar," says Chris Loben of Toronto. But he learned he could indeed, by attending sessions of RENEW International's "Theology on Tap," at various cozy venues in the Canadian city.

"Theology on Tap" was launched in the Archdiocese of Toronto in 2005 by Sister Mechtilde O'Mara (photo at right). She recently retired as ministry director of Faith Connections the young-adult network run by the Sisters of St. Joseph Toronto and Fontbonne Ministries. "Theology on Tap" became the flagship ministry of the network.
