Pope Francis' Visit to the United States Matters

Sr. Terry
Dear Friend,

A prophetic and popular pope, the first ever from Latin America, will visit the United States September 22-27. He will go to the White House, Congress, and the United Nations, and he will make other important stops that highlight his vision for the Church—“a poor Church for the poor.” As committed Catholics and pastoral leaders, it is up to us to carry the momentum of his visit and his new and vibrant vision into our parishes, apostolic organizations, social and educational institutions, and religious congregations, transforming them into vibrant centers of Gospel loving and living centered on caring for the least among us.

Turning Points
Become a Witness to Christ in Daily Life

Pope Paul VI said that people learn more from witnesses than from teachers. Pope Francis, in The Joy of the Gospel, wrote, “All of us are called to offer others an explicit witness to the saving love of the Lord.”

You, your friends, and family can view and discuss RENEW International’s video series of witness stories. Catholic women and men, younger and older, in different circumstances, share their important turning points of faith, the moments when they recognized the touch of God in their lives. We hope they will inspire you to discern the movement of the Holy Spirit and the impact of faith in your own life and become encouraged to be a witness to others as well.

Small-Community Ideas That Work:
Spontaneous Prayer

Leading Prayer in Small GroupsDoes the thought of spontaneous prayer terrify you? The leader of a small group may at times want or find it necessary to offer a spontaneous prayer, perhaps to open or close the prayer portion of a session or to open or close the meeting itself. A practice that can make this experience go smoothly involves remembering four words that represent familiar elements in prayer. The words are “you,” “who,” “do,” and “through.”

ARISE Inspires Celebration of Indigenous Cultures

Saulte Ste MarieFaith sharing in small groups in a diocese in Ontario led to three celebrations of the indigenous cultures in that part of Canada. The celebrations were organized by English- and French-speaking Catholics in the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie who were participating in ARISE Together with Christ—known in French as DEBOUT Ensemble dans le Christ.

Luke: My Spirit Rejoices! is a fresh, contemporary resource based on the Gospel of Luke. Written by scripture scholar Martin Lang, this book is the first in the RENEW Scripture Series, which is designed for personal and small-group use.

Living in the Sacred is a small-group resource based on The Sacred Fire, the latest book by best-selling author Fr. Ronald Rolheiser, OMI. This companion for RENEW International’s popular Longing for the Holy takes participants on a deeper spiritual journey and guides them on how to stay true to their commitments as disciples of Christ, extending mercy toward all.

Also available, Leading Prayer in Small Groups emphasizes the importance of group prayer for church groups of every kind and provides insight into why we pray.
