Equity Matters
When it comes to assessing risk in human service systems and the justice system, equity matters. Because risk assessment tools are developed using administrative data—which reflect the historic, systemic racism and oppression of our society, regardless of intent—risk assessment developers need to account for this bias to avoid building tools that perpetuate it. We place a high value on equity and encourage others to choose equity as a priority when developing risk assessment tools. For a full blog post on the topic, click here.

Media for a Just Society Award Finalist Reflections
Each year, we offer finalists for the Media for a Just Society Awards the opportunity to offer their insights and talk about their recognized work in blog posts. Once again, we are running these blog posts in a series on the NCCD website. Please check back each week as we publish another blog post, which will be listed here upon publication.

The Media for a Just Society Awards are the only national recognition of media whose work furthers public understanding of criminal justice, juvenile justice, child welfare, and adult protection issues. We seek stories that illustrate current realities or the promise of reform, especially those that help people understand the complex issues surrounding the nation’s social systems. Job Opportunities at NCCD
NCCD’s work to reform the criminal and juvenile justice and child welfare systems is inextricably linked with issues of racial justice and equity. We believe that NCCD staff should reflect the individuals and communities most affected by these systems and that diversity is critical to advancing just and equitable systems. While holding up these values, NCCD currently seeks several new staff to fill a variety of positions in both Madison, Wisconsin, and Oakland, California. Learn more about NCCD’s employment opportunities here.
