Empowering Youth Through Bicycles
Goings On...
Whew. Thank goodness things have slowed down a bit for El Grupo - and hopefully for you & your families - just in time for the holidays. It feels great to get back to basics, like just riding bikes, again. Our next race will not be until the start of February so please enjoy this time not traveling or with any race pressures. We want to take that time to enjoy being the big El Grupo family that we are at an EVERYONE celebration this coming Sunday:
Sunday, December 7th - 2:00pm - 6pm - El Grupo family game day & potluck dinner & team meeting. This will be a fun day of ultimate frisbee, bocce ball, kick ball and like for the whole family (maybe even a capture the flag re-do?!) - followed by a great sit down meal and meeting at the Scurry/O'Neill backyard. Please plan on attending! More details on the blog post to come
Fall Fondo was a total success thanks to you! We had a great turnout, with fantastic feedback on youth, volunteers, and the event altogether...and we raised more money than any other El Grupo fundraiser to date: $18,000!!! Expect to see some additions to our van and trailer fleet and some much needed upgrades to our clubhouse, as a result, in the coming weeks! Thank you for all your help in making it such a success.
El Grupito!
Our first season of El Grupito is coming to an end, and it has been so much fun. We want to end out this first "pilot" group with a bang - so we are going on an overnight camping trip. If you have not participated in the Doodle poll yet to find the best date, please do so!
Also, we would love your help figuring out where El Grupito goes from here. Please be on the lookout for emails with some "focus group" dates to figure out our logo, mission statement, and next steps for recruiting youth for the spring season.
And PLEASE COME to the Team Party & Meeting on Sunday, December 7th! Check the blog this week for more details (and some included in this newsletter).
Events Upcoming...
BICAS ART AUCTION!! Support El Grupo's roots, and all things awesomely and artistically bike-related. It is always a great event where you walk away with cool art and gifts for others, and give to BICAS too! Opening on Friday, December 5th with live auction on Saturday, December 6th.
Team Party & Meeting - Sunday, December 7th
Check the blog this week! Meet at Tucson/Rillito at 2pm, play some games, all head over to Cara & Leo's house for a potluck meal, meeting and socializing.
**Toy Drive for Aviva Children's Services** The holidays are a time to recognize and support those who are less fortunate, and El Grupo would like to do just that as a community. Please consider donating a new unwrapped, age appropriate toy for children from 0 to 18 years old to help make the holidays brighter for children and teens in the care of the Department of Child Safety in Pima County. Gift cards of $25 or less in value work well for teens. El Grupo will collect and ride the gifts over to Aviva the week of December 8-12
Winter Break - Practice schedule will be much different, and action packed. Most rides will leave mid-morning (so you can sleep in a little) and be done by mid-day (so you have plenty of time to do other things). Those two weeks are a great time to gain a lot of fitness and have a lot of fun exploring different rides. Your good attendance during those two weeks will pay off, for sure!
As usual, more details will be posted on the blog in the coming days/weeks about all of these... Thanks!
Tuition Reminder
You should have all received a mailed letter last month with details about some changes to tuition coming in 2015.
We will discuss further at the team meeting and move forward with those changes starting in January.
We know you value all that El Grupo offers and you know what a value it is. Thanks for doing your part!
Mechanic Hours -Fridays 2pm -6pm
Thanks to Coach Colin and all those who came to his recent workshops - next one will be "BASIC WHEEL TRUING" starting at 4pm on Friday, December 12th!
Be sure to COMMENT if you are interested when he posts about these on the blog so he knows that you will be coming.
If you have a specific mechanic skill set you would like to learn, please talk with Colin, Shawn and/or Ignacio about it.
Also, Fridays are a great day after school to get your bike(s) cleaned up and ready for the weekend.
