Empowering Youth Through Bicycles
Goings On...

School is back in session! Or will be within a short time for all. This means we move back to our standard school schedule, revive Academic Hours, and begin every Friday mechanic hours. El Grupo will be providing a full five days after school of useful opportunities to keep you having fun, learning, and growing with your friends.

It is also time to celebrate an AMAZING spring and summer of successes for El Grupo, and welcome new friends to the team. We do hope that ALL of you can make it to the team party and meeting next Sunday, August 10th!

The fall semester will bring the Arizona High School Mountain Bike League and separate mountain bike and road bike middle school student goal events. Of course, we all will engage with Tour de Tucson in November.

In addition, we will start up a pilot group of El Grupito - with opportunities for mentoring younger kids at times; lead Kidical Mass rides, one-day bike skills sessions, and participate/lead old and new fundraisers. It should be a really fun and engaging fall!

MEET: Lindsay Walker | El Grupo Assistant Director

In May 2014, I graduated with a Master of Public Health in health behavior and health promotion. El Grupo encompasses many areas of public health that interest me: active transportation, physical activity, positive youth development and psychosocial wellbeing.  Working with youth to improve their quality of life by improving their self-efficacy, self-esteem and resiliency by developing skills for a lifetime is a vocation I am drawn to.

Professional Development Support during Academic Hours | Mondays 4-7pm
I enjoy hearing the youths’ stories and brainstorming tangible ways to achieve their goals. In part to help our El Grupo youth develop positively, I will offer professional development support during academic hours. Every Monday from 4-7pm at the Clubhouse, I will be available to assist youth with any questions they may have about their personal and academic goals.  Some topics of interest may include researching about specific college programs, preparing professional documents, learning job skills, vocation assessments and more~

Email me if you already have a topic in mind and would like to set up a time! lindsay@elgrupocycling.org

Coach Shawn is adding the Team Mechanic position to his many ways that he contributes to El Grupo, and we are super excited about it!

We will begin with open shop hours on Fridays, and schedule more structured workshops soon.

If you have a specific mechanic skill set you would like to learn, please talk with Shawn and/or Ignacio about it.

Also, Fridays are a great day after school to get your bike(s) cleaned up and ready for the weekend.
