Despite completing every treatment and training program available to him during his 22-year incarceration, and showing “significantly improved character,” Baron Walker was denied parole seven times due to Wisconsin's “truth in sentencing” laws. Finally, at a hearing last month, Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Mark Sanders modified Walker’s original sentence of 60 years. Walker was released the following day, August 17, and reunited with his family.
Walker and his family figured prominently in the documentary film Milwaukee 53206
, which received a 2017 Media for a Just Society Award
from NCCD. The film was screened more than 200 times in community settings over the past year as part of a social justice impact campaign. Read more about Walker’s release here
