This Lent, Choose the Road Less Traveled By
Article Image
Dear Friend,
Life is an endless series of choices, and that often means choosing what God wills even if it conflicts with what we may want at the moment. The season of Lent helps us to focus on that by encouraging us to both discipline our will by acts of self-denial and do the will of God by acts of reconciliation and charity.

ARISE Bears Fruit in Texas Parish
“Walking the walk” became much more than a cliché when members of a parish in Texas participated in the first season of ARISE Together in Christ, a process of spiritual renewal and evangelization from RENEW International.
According to Racheal Garza, who leads the parish program, more than 350 men and women joined the small Christian communities at St. Michael Church in Levelland, a city of more than 13,000 people in the Diocese of Lubbock in the northwestern part of the state.

Evangelization Matters: RENEW at Mid-Atlantic Congress
“Evangelization matters.” So said RENEW’s Sr. Terry Rickard as she opened the Mid-Atlantic Congress on Thursday March 27, delivering the keynote address to an audience of more than 1,400 diocesan and parish leaders from 40 dioceses. Drawing on the gospel account of the woman encountering Jesus at the well, her stirring talk reinforced that all Catholics are called to be witnesses to Christ in their daily lives. This is especially true for those serving in pastoral ministries.
The next day, Sr. Terry continued this theme in a standing room-only workshop designed to empower people to share their faith story in the parish, home, work place and social arena, and to find ways to encourage others to do so. RENEW was also represented through workshops by Sr. Marie Cooper, SJC, on the evangelizing power of small communities, and by Manuel Hernandez, who presented key topics in Catholic social doctrine in Spanish to a Latino audience.
Throughout the three-day event, staff was on hand to exhibit RENEW’s growing array of faith-sharing publications and media resources and discuss ways that parishes and dioceses can effectively pursue the evangelizing mission of the Church.

Why Join Why Catholic?
Laurita Miller has gone a long way since RENEW 2000. In fact, she has gone more than a thousand miles to the Florida Keys.
Laurita experienced RENEW 2000 many years ago as part of a small Christian community at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Absecon, New Jersey. Now she lives in Big Palm Key, which is west of the Seven Mile Highway in the Florida Keys. She attends St. Peter Catholic Church there.
Her parish will participate in Why Catholic? Journey through the Catechism, an adult faith-formation process the Archdiocese of Miami is offering in collaboration with RENEW International. Laurita, who is a co-leader of the process in her parish, recently appeared at a Why Catholic? information session at San Pablo Catholic Church in nearby Marathon, and she described the “profound effect” RENEW has had on her spiritual life.

Small-Community Ideas That Work: Evangelization
Small Christian communities can take part in the evangelization that all baptized Christians are called to. We do that by allowing ourselves to be touched by the Gospel so profoundly that we in turn become Good News and attract others.
How can that happen in your parish? To find out, click here.
