Senator Reid Postpones PIPA Vote; Rep. Smith Shelves SOPA; PK Urges Congress to Start Over
Dear PK Supporter,
As Wednesday's Blackout Day protests showed, the voices of millions of Americans like you can shake Congress. Today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid decided not to go ahead with a vote on the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) on Tuesday. Moments later, Representative Lamar Smith shelved the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).
This should be a wake-up call for Congress to abandon business as usual. Simply tinkering with the details of these bills is not the way to go.
Congress must start from scratch. Washington must continue to hear from you. Lawmakers have ignored Internet technologists, law professors, artists, human rights activists, consumers, and public interest groups for too long.
So while we can celebrate now, we must stay engaged.
Momentum is on our side, but proponents of PIPA and SOPA are going to double down in an effort to push legislation through. We at PK are here in DC every day fighting for the kinds of policies that encourage creativity, innovation, and speech, and against the kinds of policies that cripple critical networks merely because a few companies have not figured out how to adapt to them.
Thanks for standing with us in the fight!
